Book fairs or craft markets: I think I've found where I feel most at home.
Since January, I've participated in 13 signing events, including book fairs and craft markets, in the Grand Est region. Thank you to everyone I had the chance to meet at these events.
Looking back, I realize I prefer craft and artisan markets, even though some book fairs have been very successful.
Why? At some fairs, many of us present our books in the same room. You have to succeed in attracting attention, and the atmosphere is sometimes calmer (with a few exceptions, like Les Imaginales, which I love).
Conversely, at craft markets, I truly feel at home. I often hear: "Oh, but you write?", "Did you create all of this?" or "Congratulations, what imagination!" Visitors discover my world out of curiosity, take the time to chat and browse my novels. These are often encounters that might never have happened elsewhere.
My profession as a graphic designer surely also plays a role. I love finding that creative energy with other artisans, illustrators, and artists.
Each market has left me with wonderful memories. Next year, I will select my events differently to discover new fairs, whether literary or creative.
And you? Do you prefer book fairs or craft markets? Where have you made your best discoveries?
